Syncoal

The synthetic coal closely resembles a high volatile bituminous coal in physical structure, but has an energy content falling between Appalachian bituminous and Illinois Basin bituminous coal. Its moisture content is about 1.5 percent, far below the typical 28 percent seen in western coals, in MSW biomass, or in woody biomass, making for high combustion efficiency in boiler applications. And its sulfur content is far below even that of the best low sulfur coals coming from the western coal basins.

The graph above compares energy content (red) and sulfur content (yellow) for a range of typical coals now being used by utilities and industry, and Syncoal (light green shaded area) produced from wood or MSW by the pyrolysis process.
